Ward Pot Money Available to South West Sheffield Groups & Projects

Do you have an activity you’d like to deliver or an improvement you’d like to make to your local area? Do you need equipment or room hire costs, IT equipment or cake funds to deliver your activity or support your neighbourhood?

The Councillors’ Ward Pots aim to support stronger, successful communities by making grants available to local voluntary, community, and self-help groups and projects that want to make a difference in their local community and which contribute to at least one of the ward priorities.

We’ve funded play equipment for play groups, tea & cake for social clubs, walking paths for schools and neighbouring communities to get active, information boards, chairobics sessions, porta-loos and bouncy castles for festivals, volunteer expenses, ovens for baking groups, room hire for meetings, community defibrillators, public benches, seeds & bulbs for the street scene, hi-vis arm bands to encourage children walking to school, the list goes on……

New fund to tackle loneliness opens to applications on the Big Lottery Fund webpage.

Charities and community groups in England can now apply for a share of close to £9 million aimed at tackling loneliness by building strong social connections and welcoming communities.

The money is from the £11.5 million Building Connections Fund announced on 19 June by the Prime Minister, Theresa May, and lead Minister for Tackling Loneliness, Tracey Crouch, in response to the Jo Cox Commission’s recommendations on Loneliness.  Almost £9 million will be distributed by the Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK, and will support projects already working to prevent or reduce loneliness to increase their impact.  Grants of between £30,000 and £100,000 will be available for projects which reach out to people of all ages who feel lonely or isolated, and encourage them to take part in activities, helping them to feel more connected. This could include making the most of community spaces, improving access to transport, using digital technology, or joining up local services to have a bigger reach. The money will also support the collecting and sharing of evidence and learning to increase understanding about what works to tackle loneliness.

Applications open Monday 16 July and will close on Friday 24 August. Guidance and criteria are available on the Big Lottery Fund website.

Youth Strand  There will be a separate Youth Strand of funding is made up of £2 million, which will be distributed by the Co-op Foundation, making grants of up to £80,000. It will open for applications in August 2018 – find out more on the Co-op Foundation blog. The Youth Strand will be open to organisations with existing youth-focused activities that could be effective at helping young people avoid long-term loneliness. Successful applicants will receive funding to explore youth loneliness in greater depth, test youth-led innovations within their existing provision, and share their learning as part of a national network.

All grants will be announced in December 2018, with funding available to support projects until March 2021.

Chairobics in Crosspool

Crosspool Forum were successful in applying for Ward Pot funding last year to continue the chairobics sessions held every Tuesday at the Scout Hall on Benty Lane from 10:45am to 11:45. The sessions are £3 and available to anyone, focusing on strength, flexibility and balance.

New Ramp access has been made to the Scouts Hall to make the building more accessible. If you’re interested in joining in or know of someone who might benefit from a class and a chat, please contact Ian on 07713687955 or email crosspoolforum@gmail.com

Down On The Farm – Crookes Community Allotment

Lord Mayor and Councillor for The Crookes and Crosspool Ward, Anne Murphy, visited the Crookes Community Farm on Monday to see how the community project is preparing for the spring and summer planting season following its successful application to the Crookes and Crosspool Ward Pot and its success in receiving a grant from the Aviva Community Fund. An aquaponics system will be fitted to demonstrate different methods of permaculture as well as some renewable energy sources to demonstrate sustainable energy sources. Building a Stronger Britain Together Programme – Grants Now Available

Building a Stronger Britain Together

The next round of the Building a Stronger Britain Together (BSBT) programme is now open.

The programme supports groups who work to create more resilient communities, stand up to extremism in all its forms and offer vulnerable individuals a positive alternative, regardless of race, faith, sexuality, age and gender. Grants up to £50,000 are available.

Grants are available across the country; locally they will be processed by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation. An information event for Sheffield groups is being held in the Town Hall on Friday 26^th January at 11am. Congratulations to the South West Sheffield Organisations Who Benefitted from the Aviva Community Fund.

Two South West Sheffield Groups have benefited from this years Aviva Community Fund. Well Community Allotment Group (Crookes Community Farm) and Lydgate Infant School Association will be awarded funding for their projects, see details below. Congratulations to both!

Aquaponics at the Well Community Allotment

Crookes Community Farm is a Community Association based in Sheffield that is on a mission to connect the community with their food.
The current system of tasteless, chemical pumped food, travelling thousands of miles wrapped in plastic to arrive at your table is broken. It is bad for you, bad for the farmer and bad for the planet. This system must change.
We combine traditional organic farming with exciting technologies such as renewable energies, vertical growing and aquaponics, (which is where fish feed the plants). All this set in a semi urban oasis providing access to the local community.
The group was awarded £4,920 to provide aquaponics at the farm. The aquaponics will play a vital role in the future of food production globally.

The project has also recently been awarded Sheffield City Council Ward Pot funding to purchase secure storage for the site. If you are interested in finding out more please visit their page

Tablets for LISA

Lydgate Infant School Association (LISA) is the school’s Parent Association. As such, it works alongside the school in order to raise vital funds to support development priorities which will directly benefit the children. Plan and organise extra-curricular events which provide additional opportunities for the children to have fun!

Recent developments have focused on outdoor provision as the school is pretty landlocked and has limited outdoor space so we need think creatively. However, our pressing need now is digitisation, and the introduction of better more modern technology for our children. Given the age of the children, this is truest definition of digital first!

Council seeks residents views on its budget – 2018

The final council budget for the year 2018/19 will be agreed in March but there is still time for local people to have their say on how money should be spent and share their ideas on how savings can be made.

The ‘Budget Conversation’, which started last month with the launch of an online survey, is now going on the road and local people are invited to attend public meetings to share their opinions and give advice to the people who will be making the decisions, Cabinet Members from Sheffield City Council.

Councillor Olivia Blake, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance said: “We are living in a difficult economic climate. There is more demand for our services but less money to spend.

“Between 2011/12 and 2017/18 we have had to save £390 million. Over the same period we have seen our grant funding reduced by 45%. For the coming year we have to find further savings of £30 million because of the austerity measures forced upon us by central government.

“At the moment our plans include increasing the council tax by at least 52 pence per week, for most households, to pay for social care, as 95% of councils have already done. But even this additional funding will not be enough to meet the demand.

“If anyone has an idea or an opinion on how we can make further savings we want to hear from them. Equally we want to know what people think of the services we already provide, and tell us what they think the priorities for the future should be”.
