Age Friendly Sheffield – October 2019 Awards Ceremony

What is it all about?

Over the next few years our team at Age UK Sheffield and the team at the Lai Yin Association will be providing opportunities to build the pathway to becoming a World Health Organisation Ageing Friendly Sheffield! This is going to involve bringing local residents, communities, citywide organisations, partners, and key players together to collaborate in the design, delivery and evaluation of the project.

How we’ll do this

We’ll do this by engaging in focus groups, co-production events, mystery shopping, volunteer roles, and a city wide launch – all of which is aimed to empower people aged 50+ to have their voices heard. We’ll also be working with organisations across the city so that we can influence future strategic and political decision making.

Who can get involved?

Everyone! Whether you’re an older person, work in the city, or want to get involved to help make a difference in your community, we’d love to work with you. We want as many people to be involved as possible.

Age Friendly City Awards

Age UK Sheffield is hosting the first ever annual Age Friendly Awards Ceremony in October 2019. Our Sheffield Age Friendly Awards are designed to reward and celebrate all the achievements and contributions of amazing local businesses, voluntary groups, communities and individuals who make Sheffield a great place to grow older and a fantastic city in which to live. We would absolutely love to hear from you. Share the love and nominate a wonderful person or group to win an award.

An application has been made to renew the status of Dore Village Society as the designated neighbourhood forum for the Dore Neighbourhood Area

The notice reads as follows:

An application has been made to renew the status of Dore Village Society as the designated neighbourhood forum for the Dore Neighbourhood Area.  The Dore neighbourhood area is partly within Sheffield Planning Authority and partly within the Peak District National Park Authority.

Dore Neighbourhood Forum was designated for a period of five years in October 2014 in accordance with the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012 and the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

This application seeks to renew it for a further five years.

The application is supported by a map of the Neighbourhood Area, a copy of the Dore Village society constitution, and contact details for the forum.

SAVTE are recruiting a highly motivated and experienced ESOL practitioner to join a team of community development and ESOL specialists deliver the SAVTE volunteer programme.

We are a Community Development organisation which is passionate about empowering speakers of other languages to take the first steps to help them develop the skills and confidence to learn functional English to enable them to become independent and active citizens in their communities. We are committed to grow and diversify our volunteer base to create a mutually supportive community of learning where the emphasis is on developing self-reliance, confidence and greater engagement within the community.

We want to appoint a dynamic worker who has broad experience of working within diverse communities to work in partnership to develop community based learning opportunities, provide volunteer training and coordination and support learners to achieve their aspirations.

Applicants must have an ESOL qualification with a minimum of 2 years teaching experience in a range of community settings and can demonstrate that they have a commitment to community development values and be able to get on with people from all backgrounds

The event – as always – is FREE ENTRY and is a fundraising event to raise funds for Heeley City Farm

Saturday 29^th   11.00 am – 2.00 pm      Summer Fayre at Clifford All Saints School, Ringinglow Road, S11 7PQ. Games, stalls, refreshments, live music, competitions and much, much more! Held jointly by Clifford All Saints School, All Saints Ecclesall and St Andrew’s Psalter Lane Church.

Saturday 29th       7.30pm       Summer Concert     A reminder with more details about the concert in St John’s Church, Ranmoor, starting at 7.30pm with the Abbeydale Singers. 

The first half of our concert will include sacred works by Wood, Tallis, J.L. Bach and new to us, Northern Lights by Ola Gjeilo. Will Todd’s In This Place will add a specially atmospheric dimension to singing in St John’s. Then follows a selection of French songs by Passereau, Saint Saens, Faure and Ravel. As usual, the choir will serve you with free wine, soft drinks and shortbread during the interval.

We start the second half with Eriks Esenvalds’ hauntingly beautiful Stars accompanied, intriguingly, by wine glasses ‘played’ by Sheffield Young Singers. We also feature romantic pieces by Schubert, our good friend Andrew Carter, and Bob Chilcott (sung with the Sheffield Young Singers), and the liltingly evocative folk song Underneath the Stars by Kate Rusby, the ‘Barnsley Nightingale’.

Ticket prices are again being held at £12, £10 (concessions) and £6 for students with card; accompanied children under 16 are free of charge.

Removal of Public Payphone: Junction of Tom Lane and Fulwood Road, Nether Green

Ant Kids Charity would like to take ownership of this telephone kiosk under BT’s adopt a kiosk programme. Further details can be found at http://www.payphones.bt.com. BT are therefore proposing to remove the payphone service at this location. (Irrespective of the outcome of the consultation, the payphone equipment would not be removed if Antkids charity did not proceed with the adoption).

BT have already put a notice in the kiosk on the 17th May 2019. The Council are collating views on the permanent removal of this telephone service, to allow Antkids charity to proceed with adopting the phonebox.
